The ivy leaf is one of our most recognizable public symbols. The ivy leaf is reflected in our new member pin and is part of our crest. Ivy symbolizes the intertwining of intellectual, philanthropic and social pursuits. It is also symbolic of the way in which our lives become intertwined as we become friends and sisters in Alpha Phi.

The Alpha Phi pin (or badge) is an unjeweled monogram of gold showing the Greek letter “Alpha” superimposed upon the Greek letter “Phi.” Inscribed in black on the letter “Phi” are the letters “a o e,” which hold special meaning to all Alpha Phi’s. Only initiated members may wear the Alpha Phi pin.

When women join Alpha Phi, they are given our new member pin. The new member pin is fashioned in the shape of an ivy leaf and set in silver pewter. Adopted in 1898, this special pin honors A-Phi’s newest members. This beautiful pin serves as a reminder of growth of the Alpha Phi sisterhood.

The Alpha Phi Crest or Coat of Arms consists of a Bordeaux shield with a scroll and ivy leaf above it. Inscribed in Greek on the scroll is our public motto, “Union hand in hand.” A bar of silver crosses the shield from left to right. The upper half of the shield contains a silver Roman lamp. The lower half of the shield contains the constellation Ursa Major.
