Vanessa atalanta rubria (Fruhstorfer, 1909)
Status: Common to abundant stray colonist
Flight Period(s): Probably double brooded. It has been found in Nebraska from 10 April – 4 November.
Range: Eurasia, northern Africa and most of North America south of arctic areas. Reported from all parts of Nebraska.
Larval Hostplant(s): Stinging and wood nettles (Urtica dioica and Laportea canadensis), Pennsylvania pellitory (Parietaria pennsylvanica) and bog hemp (Boehmeria cylindrica) are recorded hostplants found in Nebraska.
Overwinter: Annually overwinter as adults and pupae along the lower Atlantic seaboard and the Gulf Coast, and northward as conditions permit.
Commentary/Habitat: A widespread common wanderer, this species is often encountered in suburban parks and flowerbeds, alfalfa fields, pastures and flowering road ditches as well as the moister riparian areas where it’s larval hostplants grow.
