Boloria bellona (Fabricius, 1775)
Status: Rare resident
Flight Period(s): Probably double brooded, flying in late June/early July and again in mid-late August. We have records from Nebraska from 23 June – 27 August.
Range: This species inhabits roughly the southern half of Canada, south to portions of Washington, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota in the west, and Iowa, Illinois and Kentucky in the east. In Nebraska the most recent records are from the northeast corner of the state.
Larval Hostplant(s): Violets (Viola species).
Overwinter: As partially grown caterpillar.
Commentary/Habitat: Found in wet meadows and hillside prairies.
Similar Species: Silver-bordered Fritillary
