Status: Common to abundant resident. |
Flight Period(s): At least two broods, having been found in Nebraska from 28 April – 1 October. |
Range: This species occupies a large swath across central North America from central Alberta south to eastern Texas and east to Wisconsin and Georgia. It is found statewide in Nebraska. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Mainly various sunflowers (Helianthus species), but also giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifeda) and purple coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia).

Overwinter: Reportedly as partially grown caterpillar, but the pupal stage would be suspected to produce late April adults. |
Commentary/Habitat: Found primarily in prairies and road ditches as well as riparian and waste areas. The Gorgone Checkerspot is more common in the spring and early summer than late in the season. |
Similar Species: This butterfly is larger than the crescents (Phyciodes species) but smaller than the Silvery Checkerspot. It also has a band of white arrowheads on the ventral hindwing which other similar species lack. |
