Status: Uncommon stray, which may or may not breed in the state. |
Flight Period(s): Most Nebraska records (23 June – 19 October) are from late summer. |
Range: This butterfly overwinters in extreme southern portions of the United States southward to Argentina. Nebraska roughly represents the northern limit to which it normally strays. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Various milkweeds (Asclepius species) |
Overwinter: The Queen cannot overwinter in Nebraska. |
Commentary/Habitat: This species is reported from the state in most years, but usually as only an individual or two. As a stray it can be encountered anywhere but is most freqently taken at flowers. In contrast with the Monarch there is no record of a return trip southward in autumn. |
