Status: Locally abundant resident.
Flight Period(s): One spring flight. They have been found from 24 May – 22 June in Nebraska.
Range: ‘Anicia’Variable Checkerspots of one subspecies or another are found through most of the western United States and southen Canada. In Nebraska it is restricted to the northwest corner of the state.
Larval Hostplant(s): In Nebraska eggs are laid and early instars feed on Wyoming Kitten-tails (Besseya wyomingensis). As that plant becomes unavailable larvae wander and feed on a variety of other plants.
Overwinter: As partially grown caterpillars.
Commentary/Habitat: This species can normally be found in abundance Memorial Day weekend, although in some years it’s flight may already be winding down by that time. Swarms of this butterfly have been observed at the mouth of Monroe Canyon (Gilbert-Baker State Wildlife Management Area) south of Harrison in Sioux County. It inhabits grassy partially wooded slopes where its primary hostplant is found.
Similar Species: None in its range and flight period.
