Euptoieta claudia (Cramer, 1775) |
Status: Common breeding stray. |
Flight Period(s): There are two or more broods. Adults have been observed in the state from 23 April – 16 November. |
Range: This species is tropical, with permanent populations in South America north into Texas. From there the species strays northward annually in varying numbers. |
Larval Hostplant(s): A large number of hostplants have been reported for this species. It appears that in our area violets are preferred although many others may be pressed into service as conditions warrant. Larvae are often found on pansies in flowerbeds. |
Overwinter: This species overwinters in the adult stage farther south but do not appear able to survive winters in our area. |
Commentary/Habitat: This versitile species varies greatly in numbers from year to year. Size is also more variable than with most species, with some adults being quite small. As befits a wandering species, adults can be found almost anywhere and have been observed nectaring on dandelion, wingstem, boneset, ironweed, zinnias, marigolds and alfalfa. |
