Marpesia petreus (Cramer, 1776)
Status: Very rare stray
Flight Period(s): Most common from May to July in the southern United States.
Range: Resident in southern Florida and Mexico, straying north as far as Nebraska.
Larval Hostplant(s): Figs (Ficus species), none of which occur in Nebraska
Overwinter: Cannot survive winters in our area
Commentary/Habitat: This butterfly inhabits woodlands in its home range. The only Nebraska specimen was taken by Irwin Froemel in Platte County.
Similar Species: Superficially resembles swallowtails, none of which have the coloration of this species.
