Phyciodes batesii - male

Phyciodes batesii (Reakirt, 1866)
Status: Rare local resident.
Flight Period(s): There is one flight. In Nebraska it has been recorded from 24 May – 22 June.
Range: The Tawny Crescent occupies most of Alberta, and extends southeast to Pennslyvania and the New England states, then extending south into the Appalachian Mountains. There are isolated island populations in the South Dakota Black Hills and the Nebraska Pine Ridge.
Larval Hostplant(s): Asters, of which Smooth Blue Aster (Aster laevis) is suspected in Nebraska.
Overwinter: As partially grown caterpillar.
Commentary/Habitat: The Tawny Crescent is usually found along streamsides and low moist areas in the Pine Ridge region. In these areas it is normally uncommon. Most years it is unreported, the last Nebraska record being from 1994. It is possibly overlooked due to its similarity with other Crescents.
Similar Species: P. tharos and P. cocyta.
