Phyciodes picta (W. H. Edwards, 1865)
Status: Rare resident.
Flight Period(s): The Painted Crescent flies in two broods. In Nebraska there are records are from 30 May – 6 September, with flights peaking in June and late August.
Range: This species can be found from southwestern Nebraska, western Kansas and eastern Colorado south into Mexico and west into eastern Arizona. In Nebraska it is southwestern in distribution and has been found as far north as Dawes County and as far east as Furnas County.
Larval Hostplant(s): While in the past this species fed primarily on native asters it has adapted and now also unilizes an invasive exotic, Field Bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), as a hostplant. This is the likely hostplant for most recent Nebraska records.
Overwinter: Phyciodes picta overwinters as a third instar larvae.
Commentary/Habitat: This species was described in 1865 from specimen(s) taken near North Platte (Lincoln County). Doug Long has collected most of the recent records for this species in Furnas County (in 1992, 2000, and 2002) in alfalfa fields and clover adjacent to disturbed areas vegetated with bindweed. The Painted Crescent should be sought in similar habitats in the southwestern corner of the state.
Similar Species: P. phaon.
