Flight Period(s): There are two or three generations. In Nebraska the Least Skipper has been found from 21 May – 19 September. |
Range: This species inhabits the eastern half of North America, ranging northward to southern Canada. It is found statewide in Nebraska, but becomes less common in the panhandle. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Grasses of the following genera: Poa, Leersia, Spartina, Setaria, and Panicum. |
Overwinter: This species passes the winter as a full-grown caterpillar |
Commentary/Habitat: The Least Skipper is found primarily in riparian/wetland habitats, most often in the vegetation immediately next to the channel. Their flight is low and weak, often through or next to vegetation rather than over it. Adults have been observed taking nectar from ironweed, marsh marigold and goldenrod. |
