Erynnis horatius (Scudder & Burgess, 1870)
Status: Uncommon to occasional local resident
Flight Period(s): Two, although three flights are possible. It has been found in early spring in the southeast, in late June to early July along the Niobrara River in the north (first flight or second?), and in late August to early September in the central (third flight?). It has been reported in Nebraska from 26 April – 10 September.
Range: Found in the eastern United States and parts of the southern Rocky Mountains. In Nebraska it is widely distributed (with large gaps in its range), with no records from the sandhills, southwest, and southern panhandle.
Larval Hostplant(s): Oaks, particularly Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in Nebraska. Ornamental Wisteria has also been reported.
Overwinter: As fully grown caterpillars
Commentary/Habitat: Horace’s Duskywings are usually associated with oak woodlands, but occasionally stray some distance from them. They have been found at Indian Cave State Park, Table Rock SWMA and the Niobrara Valley Preserve.
Similar Species: Juvenal’s Duskywing flies in the same habitats in the spring flight, but can be separated by markings on the ventral hindwing which Horace’s Duskywing lacks.
