Erynnis juvenalis (Fabricius, 1793)
Status: Uncommon to common local resident, likely under-reported due to its early flight period.
Flight Period(s): One spring/early summer flight. Nebraska records range from 27 April – 3 July, the late date being a worn specimen from northern Nebraska in a late year. Normally one would not expect to find this species after early June (mid May southeast).
Range: Erynnis juvenalis is found in the eastern half of the United States, with addtional isolated populations in the west. It has been found in eastern Nebraska and extending westward in wooded bluffs along the Niobrara River.
Larval Hostplant(s): Oaks – Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) in Nebraska.
Overwinter: As full-grown caterpillars
Commentary/Habitat: Juvenal’s Duskywing inhabits openings in oak woodlands and their borders. It is unreported from many areas with oak woodlands and has the potential to be found over a much greater area in association with them. Adults often perch on the ground and males fly low over it in search of females. Erynnis juvenalis has been collected at Indian Cave State Park (Nemaha and Richardson Counties), Table Rock State Wildlife Management Area ( Pawnee County) and the Niobrara Valley Preserve (Brown and Keya Paha Counties).
