Hesperia ottoe W. H. Edwards, 1866 |
Status: Uncommon resident |
Flight Period(s): One flight from mid June to early August, generally peaking in early July. Flight dates range from 23 June – 9 August |
Range: Found from the Dakotas south to Oklahoma and east to Missouri and Michigan. Found statewide in Nebraska. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Grasses, primarily Andropogon scoparius |
Overwinter: As partially grown caterpillar |
Commentary/Habitat: This species inhabits relatively undisturbed mixed and shortgrass prairies. The Ottoe and the rarer Arogos skippers are sometimes used as environmental indicators as both require higher quality prairies to sustain populations, and as such both are on the decline in the state. Ottoe skipper adults have been observed taking nectar from purple coneflower, liatris and hairy verbena flowers. Males are sometimes found on mud. |
Similar Species: The underside is similar to Anatrytone logan, but the uppersides are easily differentiated. Is separated from H. leonardus pawnee mainly by flight period with pawnee not on the wing until mid August. |
