Status: Uncommon to common breeding stray |
Flight Period(s): Recorded in Nebraska from May – 4 November. The fiery skipper cannot survive winters in our area, but after arriving likely breeds until frost. |
Range: Found from Argentina north to the southern United States ( Florida to Texas to southern California). From there it strays northward to New York and northern California. The Fiery Skipper has been found primarily in the southern half of Nebraska. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Grasses are recorded, especially timothy grass (Phleum pratense) and bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) |
Overwinter: This species cannot survive Nebraska winters |
Commentary/Habitat: This species varies greatly in numbers from year to year, being absent in much of the state in most years but occasionally becoming abundant in southern and central areas in late summer. Adults avidly visit flowers in road ditches, flowerbeds and other open habitats. They have been observed on marsh marigolds in dry river channels in early autumn. |
