Megathymus streckeri leussleri Holland, 1931 |
Status: Occasional to common local resident |
Flight Period(s): One flight, which in Nebraska occurs from 23 May – 31 June. |
Range: Found from eastern Montana and western North Dakota south to northern Texas, and west through Utah and northern Arizona. In Nebraska it is found to the north and west of Dawson County. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Yuccas - Yucca glauca |
Overwinter: As larvae |
Commentary/Habitat: Strecker’s Giant Skipper occurs in loose colonies in association with extensive populations of yucca plants. They have a somewhat unusual life cycle in that larvae bore into the yucca and live, feed, and overwinter inside the rootstalk where they feed on plant material and sap. Pupation occurs the following spring. In Nebraska they reach their greatest density in the sand hills where they occasionally become common. Males are active and patrol in search of females who are more restive. |
Similar Species: In Nebraska Strecker’s Giant-Skipper is more northwestern in distribution, is larger and flies later than the Yucca Giant-Skipper whose distribution is primarily southwestern. |
