Flight Period(s): Two broods. It has been found in Nebraska from 3 May – 7 September. |
Range: Almost the entire United States (with the exception of some of the inter-mountain west and southern Florida) south into central Mexico. It is found statewide in Nebraska. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) and lamb’s quarters (Chenopodium album) |
Overwinter: As a full-grown caterpillar |
Commentary/Habitat: The Common Sootywing is most common in late spring to early summer. The hostplants and butterflies thrive in disturbed, overgrazed or open areas. Adults have been observed nectaring on ragwort, fleabane and dogbane. |
