Poanes massasoit (Scudder, 1864) |
Status: Rare resident. There is but one specimen from Nebraska |
Flight Period(s): One mid-summer flight. The date for the Nebraska record is July 5. On this basis the species should be sought from late June to mid July. |
Range: The Mulberry Wing resides in an area from Minnesota and Iowa east to the East Coast. The only specific Nebraska record is from Boone County. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Sedges (Carex species) |
Overwinter: Likely as a larva |
Commentary/Habitat: Poanes massasoit is mentioned several times as occuring in Nebraska in old literature. Barber (1894) mentions a record from Dodge County which has since disappeared and was thought to be in error in light of no subsequent records. The species was rediscovered in 2001 when a fresh male was captured from roadside milkweeds in a marshy area along Beaver Creek northeast of Albion in Boone County. Poanes viator was also common at the same milkweed flowers so observers should be on the lookout for this species whenever they encounter P. viator in the northeastern corner of the state. |
