Poanes taxiles (W. H. Edwards, 1881) |
Status: Uncommon resident |
Flight Period(s): One mid-summer flight. Records from the state are from 28 June – 1 August. |
Range: The Taxiles Skipper is found in mountain habitats from eastern Wyoming south into Mexico. In Nebraska it can be found in the Pine Ridge and along the Niobrara River east to Keya Paha County. It should be watched for farther east along the Niobrara River as far as the ponderosa pine habitat extends. |
Larval Hostplant(s): Grasses: Dactylis,Poa, Agrostis and Elymus species |
Overwinter: As a caterpillar |
Commentary/Habitat: The Taxiles Skipper can be found along and atop open slopes and woodland margins, but predominantly occurs along streamsides in Pine Ridge habitats. It does not seem to be abundant, the most numerous count along the Niobrara River consisting of 11 individuals in a day in multiple locations. This species flies later than most single brooded skippers, and should not be expected before early July (most records are from mid July). |
Similar Species: Poanes hobomok overlaps P. taxiles range in western NE, but P. hobomok should fly earlier. |
