Polites rhesus (W. H. Edwards, 1878)
Status: Uncommon to rare local resident
Flight Period(s): This species flies in a single spring flight. In Nebraska it has been recorded from 10-30 May.
Range: The Rhesus Skipper is found from southern Saskatchewan southward through New Mexico. In Nebraska it occurs primarily in the panhandle, with the easternmost record being from Arthur County.
Larval Hostplant(s): Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis)
Overwinter: Probably as a fully-grown caterpillar, but the early emergence dates might also suggest the pupal stage.
Commentary/Habitat: The Rhesus Skipper inhabits mixed to shortgrass prairies on hillsides or hilltops. They form colonies where they are rarely abundant, but outside of which they are non-existant. They are likely often overlooked or missed due to their early flight dates and local nature.
