Colias alexandra (W. H. Edwards, 1863)
Status: Uncommon to common local resident.
Flight Period(s): Double brooded in Nebraska with records from 24 May – 18 August. Marrone (2002) reports it as late as 3 Sept in South Dakota. In the Pine Ridge the first flight normally peaks in early to mid June and the second in late July and early August.
Range: The western half of sub-arctic Canada south through the mountain and intermounatin west of the United States to central California, Arizona and New Mexico. In Nebraska it is found in the western panhandle counties.
Larval Hostplant(s): Herbaceous legumes including Astragalus, Lathyrus, Lotus, Lupinus, Medicago, Oxytropis, Thermopsis, Trifolium, and Vicia species. Golden Pea (Thermopsis rhombifolia) is thought to be the primary hostplant in Nebraska.
Overwinter: As a caterpillar.
Commentary/Habitat: C. alexandra inhabits open coniferous woodlands and creekbottoms in Pine Ridge habitats in western Nebraska. As is the case with many populations at the edge of their range numbers vary greatly from year to year.
Similar Species: Clouded and Orange Sulphurs.
