Phoebis agarithe (Boisduval, 1836)
Status: Rare stray.
Flight Period(s): This species flies all year in its home range. In Nebraska it has been found from 27 August – 14 October.
Range: This tropical Sulphur resides as far north as southern portions of Texas and Florida. Strays have been recorded as far north as South Dakota.
Larval Hostplant(s): Shrubby Fabaceae, primarily Cassia and Mimosa species, none of which occur in Nebraska.
Overwinter: Does not overwinter this far north.
Commentary/Habitat: The most recent records for this butterfly come from Doug Long who has recorded it four times in Furnas County since 1987. All were from flowers - zinnia, verbena and butterfly bush. Two were males, and both females were the white form “alba”.
Similar Species: Orange Barred and Cloudless Sulphurs.
