Cercyonis oetus charon (W. H. Edwards, 1872)
Status: Rare resident
Flight Period(s): There is one mid-summer flight. The few Nebraska records are from 2-20 July.
Range: The Small Wood-Nymph is found from southern portions of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan south into California, Arizona and New Mexico. In Nebraska it has been found in Sioux and Dawes Counties.
Larval Hostplant(s): Undetermined grasses
Overwinter: As an unfed caterpillar
Commentary/Habitat: While rare in Nebraska, this species can be locally abundant in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where Marrone (2002) reports it inhabits pine forest openings, short grass prairies, meadows and foothills. The last Nebraska record is from 1962 from near Crawford by Kurt Johnson.
