A new class Biology 430/830 Section 01 "Special Topics in GIS" was available during Fall, 2000.  This class can be taken for a range of credit hours (1 - 6) and involves learning ArcView GIS and the completion of a project.

Environmental Modeling Biology 408/808 will also include and introduction to GIS particularly in case studies of conservation issues.

I also teach 2-day workshops called "Introduction to ArcView".  This 16 hour class results in certification by ESRI in ArcView. Currently I plan to have the next class in late July either in Kearney or O'Neil Nebraska.

The next "Introduction to ArcView" class will be . . . ?  None scheduled at this point.  If you have an group of interested folks, please let me know!

I am in the process of becoming ESRI certified to teach the "Introduction to ArcGIS 8.1" class series. I am not able to provide a date for my certification because ESRI is moving slowing in the introduction of the entire ArcGIS platform. I recommend this class even to current ArcView and ArcInfo users. Both the interface and data structure are substantially changed.

Key Points of the "Intro. to ArcView" Class

  • Overview of and practice with all the major menu commands and operations of the ArcView GIS software. No previous experience with the software is necessary.
  • Discussion and demonstration of the mapping concepts that underlie ArcView and GIS.  Topics covered include map projections, distance and area measurements, making and working with themes.
  • Where to find state and federal digitized data.
  • Demonstration and discussion of more advanced topics such as Spatial Analyst, the 'Projector!' extension, loading and using sample extensions, and the Geoprocessing Wizard.
  • Certification from, and registration with, Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) - a recognized world leader in the GIS field.
  • Credit is available through UNK!
