Projects

2006-2007

The University of Nebraska at Kearney SIFE team has completed 20 projects thus far in 2006-2007.  The team has worked with several community groups to provide educational outreach to a variety of ages and interests.  The 2006-2007 projects include:

Project Title Brief Description
Entrepreneurship Day Partnered with Midland Lutheran College SIFE team to teach high school students about starting and owning a business.  Activities included applying for a business loan, selecting a location, filming a commercial, analyzing an ethics case, and filing an income statement.
Financial Jeopardy! In collaboration with the UNK Financial Aid Office, presented a game show, question and answer format to test college students on their knowledge of financial matters.
$mart Money Kid Essay Contest Invited area elementary and middle school students to write essays demonstrating their financial literacy.  Business Advisory Board members helped judge the essays and determine the winners.
Hometown Heroes Created a 30-minute video that profiles local entrepreneurs.  The video is available through the Nebraska Business Development Centers. Click the link below to see our Hometown Heroes' advice to entrepreneurs.

2005-2006

The UNK SIFE team had a busy year in 2005-2006.  The team offered 18 projects during the year, directly impacting 12,713 people.  At Regional Competition in Miami, the team won the Financial Literacy Individual Topic Competition.  The 2005-2006 projects included:

One World, 

One Market

Developed a learn-by-doing workshop to teach young people the concepts of free trade, tariffs, quotas, currencies, and globalization.
Learning with Lemonade Taught middle school students the basics of starting and owning a business, including both challenges and potential benefits.  Students have an opportunity to operate an online lemonade stand that emphasized profit, marketing, and management skills.
Etiquette Dinner In collaboration with UNK Career Services, helped college students develop skills necessary to succeed in a variety of business social settings.
Penny Power Taught Girl Scouts the basics of saving, budgeting, and how to spot counterfeit money.

 

2004-2005

During 2004-2005, the UNK SIFE team completed 13 projects that directly impacted 894 people.  At Regionals Competition in Boston, the UNK SIFE team was named Overall Regional Champion, with individual topic competition wins in Financial Literacy, Market Economics, Ethics, Success Skills, and Entrepreneurship.  The 2004-2005 projects included:

Project Title Brief Description
Dollars & Donuts A four-part series that coincided with SIFE's National Personal Financial Success Skills Month, which covered the personal finance topics of insurance, investing, taxes and credit. 
KBA Consulting Business consulting and business plan creation for a local non-profit, the Kearney Boxing Association.
Ethics Debate Kearney High Forensics Team conducted a parliamentary procedure debate that concerned gambling in Nebraska.
SIFE'd An entertaining, although unsettling, video of interviews with ordinary people in which common personal finance and business questions were posed, such as, "What does ATM stand for?"

 

2003-2004

In its first year, the UNK SIFE team established an  impressive reputation for providing meaningful educational outreach projects in the community. At its first regional  competition in 2004, the UNK SIFE team received '1st Runner Up' and  'Rookie of the Year' honors.  The 2003-2004 projects included:

Project Title Brief Description
Musical Downloads Challenged area high school students to consider and express their views on the ethics of music downloads by participating in an essay contest.
An Economic Way of Thinking Developed children’s understanding of economic choices and the ramifications of their choice.  They also learned about the importance of saving and investing money and became familiar with the concept of “opportunity cost.”
World Free Markets Introduced the main principles of free markets, concepts of competition, international currencies, monopolistic trends, and types of economic systems to middle school students.
Laser Business Plan Analyzed whether a high-tech laser recently purchased by the college could be used in a student-run business.
