Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to conduct research projects in the Human Performance Lab. Students present their research at UNK Student Research Day, at regional and National Conferences. In the past 3 years over 20 students have attended the American College of Sports Medicine National Meeting with 6 graduate students presenting research at this level.

In addition, undergraduate students are required to do an internship as a capstone of their academic career. Internship sites our students have attended include health clubs, fitness centers and corporate wellness programs in Nebraska, Florida, Colorado, Connecticut and California.

Our students are doing a variety of things and some may surprise you!

Exercise Science Management Majors include Ryan Krueger (2004), Katie Villwok (2004), Xiomara Rodriguez (2005). Elizabeth Martin (2006), Cali Cordes (2006) and Kate Semin (2006). Ryan is at UNMC in Radiography School. Katie Villwok started as the Fitness Manager at the Elkhorn Common Ground Recreation & Fitness Center in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Xiomara Rodriguez is at Nursing School in Omaha. Elizabeth Martin is headed to Vermont this fall for her internship. She will be working at Green Mountain at Fox Run Women’s Retreat. Cali Cordes is headed to Creighton University this fall for Physical Therapy School. Kate Semin will be attending Physical Therapy School at UNMC.

Exercise Science Majors include Rachel Hurlburt (2004), Ty Dworak (2005), Ashley Scantling (2005), Brad Bohn (2006), Erich Landon (2006), & Nate Harms (2006). Rachel Hurlburt is in Kansas City at Chiropractic School, Ty Dworak is in St. Louis at Chiropractic School, & Erich Landon will begin Chiropractic School this fall in Minneapolis. Nate Harms and Brad Bohn will begin Medical School this fall at UNMC. Ashley Scantling is in Optometry School at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma.

Exercise Science Athletic Training majors include Amber Perry (2004) Scottsbluff regional medical center, Jason Fritzen (2003) Physician Assistant School UNMC, Maggie Bloom (2004) Clinical AT Vail, CO., Sarah Meade (2005) Physical Therapy School UNMC, Deborah Stephenson (2005) Physical Therapy School Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO., Alicia Simmons (2005) Clinical AT in Tyler, TX., Dallas Fichtner (2003) Graduate Assistant at Boise State University, Matt Stern (2006)

Graduate Students in Exercise Science Darin Falk (2002) is currently completing his PhD at the University of Florida, Sarah Boury (2004) is the Director of the Kearney Community Learning Center, Renee Steinkruger (2004) is now the Director of Fit for Work out of Lincoln, and most recently Michael Ray (2006) is the Director of Physical Activity Promotion for the State of Nebraska and Bryce Abbey (2006) is the Assistant Director of the Human Performance Laboratory at UNK.
