Description: The key diagnostic characteristics of this beetle are the antennae, which have a black basal segment; the remaining two segments are orange in color. Each elytron of this beetle contains two lines of orange, one posterior and one anterior.

Range: Nicrophorus orbicollis is the most abundant and commonly encountered beetle in the state. This species prefers heavily forested areas, although it is often collected in grasslands.
Occurs across most of the eastern half of North America.

Notes: In Nebraska, this beetle is nocturnal and is active from May through October. |
